Wharfe. La jonction se fait à ********. Elle arrose ensuite : Barlby,
Goole, Barton-upon-Humber, Kingston-upon-Hull, Great-Grimsby.
Elle reçoit : à gauche : la Derwent; à droite : la Aire, la Don, la Trent. |

Étymologie :
Références : Rivet & Smith : The Place-names of Roman Britain, p. 240 : Ptolemy II, 3, 4 : Abou potamon Ekbolai ( = ABI FLUVII OSTIA) Ravenna : 10747 : RUMABO Ravenna's form as it stands has no explanation in British, and as in other cases (see ELAVIANA) it seems probable that the compiler misread *Flum Abo from a map-source as though it were a habitation-name, further misreading Fl- as R-. The name occurs in the list at the very end of a section; immediately before, the compiler has listed a group of names in what is now Northumbria just north of the eastern end of Hadrian's Wall (which was marked on his map). If he is in fact listing the Abus here, he has returned south of the Wall; but as Dillemann (p. 63) has shown, in many cases at the end of a section he gathers in names omitted earlier and having no necessary relation to the section. DERIVATION. The name means simply 'river'; see ABISSUM. The root does not seem to be found abroad in this bare form. ------------ JC Even : Le nom semble signifier tout simplement : la rivière. |
