Étymologie

A. Verlucio

- Itinéraire d'Antonin 4864 (Iter XIV) : VERLUCIONE.

Derivation : The name represents British Uerluciu for older Uerleuciu, nominative, accommodated in the Latin third declension; its sense is 'very bright place '. The Celtic prefix *uer- has as cognates super- (s-uper), uper, English over, etc.; in Gaulish *uer-, in British *uer- and later *uor-, represented in modem derivatives such as Welsh gwor-, gor-; in Cornish and Breton; also Irish for, for- 'on, over'. Its sense is thus intensive, 'very', and augmentative, 'great'. See for many names into which it enters Holder III. 179 and GPN 279-81. It is present in British Vernemetum 'fanum ingens' and Virvedrum (for *Ver-), Verturiones, Verubium, also in the name of the famous Vortigern, *Vertigernos 'superbus tyrannus' = 'great prince'. The base lucis as in Leuca and related names (see LEUCA) ; the original diphthong is here reduced via O to U (see ALAUNA (1) and references there to LHEB). The name is completed by the derivational suffix *-io-.
