A. *Vindonium

* Rivet & Smith, p 503  :

Source :

- AI 48610 (Iter XV) : VINDOMI

- AI 4831 (Iter XII, by error of the copyist) : VINDOMI

Derivation :

The entry may be taken fairly literally (i.e. withou supposing that a second element has been abbreviated) in view of parallels in Gaul, e.g. personal names Vindonio, Vindonius, and the divine name Vindonnus; see Holder, III, 349. Vindinum was the name of Le Mans. These assure us that we may legitimately postulate a name formed from British *uindo- 'white' (see VINDOBALA) ans suffixes *-on-io as in CANONIUM, presumably with a sense 'white place', i.e. one on chalky ground. The correction to -oni in AI's entry is easy; the name appears to be a locative like Sorvioduni AI 483,4.

Identification :

Probably the Roman settlement at the Wheatsheaf Inn, North Waltham, Hampshire (SU 5645).

B. Wheatsheaf :

- de wheat = germe de blé, + sheaf = gerbe.

C. North-Waltham

* Eilert Ekwall : Wealtham  909 BCS 625; Northe Wautham, 1289 Ep. ... OE W(e)ald-ham 'Ham at a wood' ... OE weald bacame wealt before the h on the second syllable.

* A.D Mills : 'homesteads or village in a forest'.
