* DERIVATION. In a recent study in BBCS, XXVI (1974-76), 30-31 and 139-40, E. P. Hamp resolves the problem of what had seemed a mysterious name. He postulates a British *uagna meaning probably 'marsh ', the ancestor of Old Welsh guoun and Welsh gwawn 'moor, meadow', Breton geun, yeun 'marsh'; also Irish  fan 'slope, valley'. To its yod-stem is added the suffix *-aco- (see BRAVONIACUM) to give a sense 'marshy place', perhaps ' marshy-place estate '. For locative -is, see ANICETIS. There seem to be no other uses of this word in ancient toponymy.
